What Is Mineral Makeup?

Mineral Makeup. You wear it; but do you actually know what it is? Have you ever stopped to think about it?

Simply put, mineral makeup is crushed minerals from the earth.

Rocks if you will.

Healthy rocks. Good for your skin rocks.

Mineral makeup ROCKS! (You had to know that was coming).

Pretty simple, eh?

Women have been wearing minerals on their face for ages. Titanium dioxide, for example has been in lipsticks, powders, liquid foundations, even mascara, all along. No one really talked much about them. Until now. Mineral makeup is one of the hottest trends in makeup today; and for good reason.

Minerals –  such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, mica and iron oxides are *mined from the earth, crushed to a fine silky powder, then mixed together in various ways to create amazing palates of shimmer.

Like fairy dust.

Each mineral is blended into the formula for a specific purpose . Micas add color and often sheen and shimmer. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide offer sunscreen, coverage, healing properties & water repellency,  iron oxides add color and adhesion so the minerals last all day.

Gorgeous colors, full UVA/UVB sun protection, full coverage options, healing abilities, water-proof, last-all-day power.

All this, with out chemicals, dyes and preservatives.

*Now, I have something interesting to tell you. As much as I strive for natural, as opposed to synthetic ingredients, there are times when synthetic is best. This may come as a surprise to you….but this is one of those times. Much of the mica & iron oxides we use today is not mined from the earth, instead it is manufactured expressly for the purpose of cosmetic usage. Iron oxides are often attached to toxic metals in the earth and so it is safer and purer for us to use the purer form of manufactured minerals. In fact, only synthetic iron oxides are approved for cosmetic use in the U.S. today.

*Note – An update on synthetic vs. naturally mined minerals – Another source has informed me that the above statement is an incorrect statement that is circulating. Minerals used for mineral makeup are indeed mined from the earth, but in a controlled environment to avoid heavy metal contamination. The minerals are then oxidized in a lab to get our amazing variety of colors.

At this point, I am not sure which is the correct bit information. Perhaps somewhere in between the two statements lies the truth.

What matters to me is that the minerals are safe for use. I will keep you posted as I learn more.

Pure and natural mineral makeup will contain only four or five ingredients.. However, if you are purchasing drug store mineral makeup, you are getting a few other ingredients as well. Ingredients that your skin, and your health are better off with out. Choose wisely. It makes a difference for the health of your skin.
