First things First – Get Primed

Mineral Makeup Tutorial: Primer

Primer is the new kid on the makeup block, and I would say, largely misunderstood. Primer has been around for as long as there have been models and professional makeup artists,  but it is only in the last few years that it has hit the mainstream for us regular (wink) folks. What is it, and do we really need it?

First off, no, not everyone will benefit from primer, but there are those of us who can benefit from a good quality one; a primer that is safe to use and effective.

What is primer? What can it do for you? Are you a primer candidate? If so, how do you use it?

First of all, Dash’s Natural Mineral Primer can be used by most everyone, as it is virtually colorless. It contains two ingredients: mica and arrowroot, both of which are naturally occuring in nature.

The purpose of a primer is to prepare your skin for foundation by smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. It does this by filling them in, giving you a smooth canvas to work with.

You will also find that foundation will stay on longer and you will use less of it.

Oily skins will find that it absorbs excess oil. Those with acne scaring or redness will find it tones down the red and fills in the uneven patches.

Most primers on the market are silicon based and most likely will contain waxes, and polymers. If you have contact dermatitis, allergies or milia, I recommend staying away from these particular primers. Instead use a mineral primer with safe ingredients, such as mica and arrowroot ( and NO nano-particles).  And hey, I happen to have just the one for you…surprised? Grin.

To apply your mineral primer, use the correct brush for the desired effect. For a light dusting all over the face, use a dedicated kabuki or powder brush. For more concentrated coverage, use a concealer brush in the spots you most want to cover. Follow with your concealer of choice,  (More to come on concealers in a future post) and then your mineral foundation. Perfect!
